Car park under water, some shops shutter after flash flood hits Subang Parade

Meanwhile, flood relief centres open in Selangor, Perak as deluges swell rivers

11:38 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Subang Jaya was struck by a flash flood today, inundating the Subang Parade shopping complex following a thunderstorm at around 5pm.

The Subang Jaya Fire and Rescue Station responded to a distress call at 8.39pm, dispatching a team to the location.

Reports indicated that multiple ground-floor shops were forced to close for the day, while parts of the car park were submerged under water.

“Upon arrival, emergency responders found the basement of the shopping centre submerged in approximately 0.3m of water, affecting an electrical equipment shop on the same level,” the Subang Jaya fire station said in a statement today.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported, and the water levels have been receding gradually.

In other regions, due to heavy rainfall causing river levels to surge dangerously, nine temporary relief centres have been established in Selangor and Perak to assist flood victims.

Five relief centres were activated in Sepang after Sg Dengkil overflowed its banks.

Sepang police chief Wan Kamarul Azran Wan Yusof disclosed that 255 victims, comprising 67 families, sought shelter at community halls in Kg Dato Ahmad Razali, Taman Gemilang and the Jenderam Hilir village community management council hall.

Several areas, including Kg Sg Buah, Jenderam Hilir, Kg Orang Asli Batu 28 Jenderam Hilir, Kg Sri Tanjung and Kg Chemperai, were notably affected by the deluge.

Likewise, in Perak, the Drainage and Irrigation Department highlighted critical water levels at various locations.

Sg Bidor in Changkat Jong reached a dangerous height of 3.96m, while Sg Kinta at the Tg Tualang weir and Sg Kerian in Selama hit warning levels of 13.06m and 11.85m, respectively.

The secretariat of the Perak disaster management committee confirmed flood victims in the state are being accommodated in four relief centres in Hilir Perak and Kerian. – November 5, 2023
