KUALA LUMPUR – Prolonged downpours which began in the afternoon hours, have led to flash floods in various parts of the Klang Valley.

Tree branches were knocked down onto properties due to the severe downpours and strong winds in Taman Connaught, as reported by a TikTok user.

Several police stations reported flash floods affecting parts of the Brickfields area, but authorities have managed to keep the situation under control.

In Kedah, there have been reports of flash floods affecting several areas in the state. Actor Fikry Ibrahim shared videos on X (previously known as Twitter) showing the impact of the flood on the Changlun Highway to Bukit Kayu Hitam, Kedah.

In addition, a netizen shared videos and photos in the Facebook public group known as Wira WieAre, depicting strong currents in various districts in Kedah, including Bukit Kachi, Changlun, Taman Jelutong, Sintok, and Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM).

The Meteorological Department had earlier predicted the occurrence of four to six episodes of heavy rain during the Northeast Monsoon season, which is expected to last from November 11, 2023, to March 2024.

The heavy rain is expected in Kelantan, Terengganu, Johor, Pahang, and the western side of Sarawak from November to January.

The department warned that continuous heavy rain over several days can lead to flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas. When heavy rain coincides with high tides and storm surges, the risk of flooding becomes even more severe.

“In addition, continuous and strong northeasterly winds can cause rough seas, rising sea levels, and large waves in the South China Sea,” the department said in a statement today.

Heavy rains have been affecting the country in recent days, leading to an increase in the number of people being displaced by floods in Perak and Selangor. – November 7, 2023
