Suhaimi regrets lewd remarks about Teresa Kok

Langkawi MP admits mistake, makes public apology to speaker, all MPs in Dewan Rakyat today

12:40 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Datuk Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (Langkawi-PN) has apologised to the Dewan Rakyat and all the MPs for his lewd remarks about Teresa Kok (Seputeh-PH) made on October 26.

“I would like to apologise for the mistake that I made during the Budget 2024 debate on October 26. This apology is made to the speaker (Tan Sri Johari Abdul) and all the members of Parliament regarding my statement that might have hurt feelings and offended (people).

“I would like to stress that, as a people’s representative of Langkawi, issues relating to Langkawi are close to my heart and not to be taken lightly,” he told the lower House today.

Suhaimi’s remarks were met with cheers from the government aisle, with someone saying, “Good job Langkawi, congratulations!” and “apology accepted”.

On October 26, Suhaimi was debating Budget 2024 in Parliament while inviting people to see penguins at the Underwater World Langkawi when Kok suddenly interjected, asking him if one could wear a pair of shorts to the beach on the island.

Suhaimi, a former Umno man, responded: “To YB Seputeh, it is fine even if you come without wearing anything,” followed by bursts of laughter from the male MPs sitting behind Suhaimi.

Following rebukes from Deputy Dewan Rakyat Speaker Alice Lau and Kampar MP Chong Zemin, Suhaimi added that he wants to “imagine Seputeh (Kok) coming to Langkawi without any clothes on”.

Suhaimi’s sexist remarks were later heavily criticised on social media, including by Pakatan Harapan reps who said Suhaimi had turned Parliament “into a joke”, and showed total disrespect for a fellow MP (Kok) and women in the country. – November 9, 2023
