No need for new laws on ‘3R’ cases: deputy minister

Sedition Act, used to deal with such cases, has seen 19 cases prosecuted out of 960 investigated since 2010

3:35 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Putrajaya has no plans to enact laws to be used specifically in cases involving race, religion, and royalty (3R), Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Shamsul Anuar Nasarah told the Dewan Rakyat today.

This is because existing laws are sufficient to deal with such issues, Bernama reported him as saying.

The Sedition Act 1948 (Act 15) is the current law that is used to deal with 3R cases, and Shamsul Anuar said the government would not use the act “arbitrarily” against any party.

Since 2010 until September this year, 960 cases were investigated under the Sedition Act, but only 19 were brought to court.

“This shows that we are transparent and do not take action against any party indiscriminately. Actions were taken according to the laws,” he said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The deputy minister was replying to a question from Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (Kota Bharu-PN) on how the government determined whether or not certain issues fell into the 3R categories.

Shamsul Anuar said of the 104 cases involving 3R issues, 60 had been resolved, and the rest are still being investigated. Of the 104, he said 47 cases involved the royal institution, 30 were on religion, and 27 were on race. – November 14, 2023
