[UPDATED] MIC assembly unanimous on resolution for Najib’s full pardon

Delegates also support no contest for party top two in elections next year

6:09 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – MIC today passed a resolution supporting a full pardon for former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is currently serving time for corruption.

The resolution received the full support of 1,500 delegates at the party’s 77th general assembly held in Serdang today, Bernama reports.

MIC deputy president Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said a pardon for Najib was one of two resolutions that were passed unanimously, the other being no contests for the president and deputy president’s posts in the party’s elections to be held next year.

“The second resolution is to consider a full pardon for former prime minister Najib,” Saravanan said according to Bernama.

On the resolution for no contests for the top two MIC posts, Saravanan said this was brought to the assembly following several motions at state level that both posts be uncontested during next year’s party elections.

The assembly today was officiated by MIC president Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park in Serdang.

In August last year, Najib, now 70, began a 12-year prison sentence after the Federal Court upheld his conviction by the high court in July 2020.

The ex-prime minister was also fined RM210 million in the case where he faced seven charges for abuse of power, criminal breach of trust and money laundering involving RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd, a former subsidiary of 1Malaysia Development Bhd.

Saravanan, meanwhile, said MIC would continue to support the unity government led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim until the next general election.

MIC will decide on the support given at the appropriate time, he added.

“Although we do not prioritise positions, the party will be uncompromising if we are not respected,” Bernama quoted him saying. – November 18, 2023
