Dewan Rakyat: tax collection from shadow economy on agenda today

Shadow economy taxes estimated to contribute 30% of Malaysia's GDP

8:26 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The government’s move to collect taxes from the shadow economy, which is estimated to contribute about 30% to the gross domestic product, is scheduled to be raised in the Dewan Rakyat today.

According to the Order Paper on the Parliament website, the matter will be raised by Datuk Ahmad Amzad Mohamed @ Hashim (Kuala Terengganu-PN) to the finance minister during the question-and-answer session.

In addition, Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (Tebrau-PH) will pose a question to the finance minister concerning the amount of Malaysian ringgit invested in Malaysia and abroad by GLC and GLIC companies.

Puah also wants to know whether this investment is in line with the government’s aspirations to strengthen the Malaysian equity market.

Meanwhile, Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad (Parit Sulong-BN) will ask the health minister to provide an update on the National Centre of Excellence for Mental Health’s operational status, key targets, and most recent achievements since its launch in October last year.

After the question-and-answer session, the Dewan Rakyat will continue the debate on Supply Bill 2024 at the committee level for the relevant ministries.

The Dewan Rakyat sitting lasts 32 days, from October 9 to November 30, 2023. – November 20, 2023
