Bomb threat emails: cops receive two more reports from Kajang, Penang schools

Police conduct checks with K9 Unit after evacuating premises, but no explosives found

4:26 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The police have received two more reports on the bomb scare similar to those that resulted in the evacuation of a number of schools yesterday.

Kajang police chief Mohd Zaid Hassan said he received a report from an international school at around 8am today.

He told Bernama that the school had gotten the threatening email yesterday but only noticed it this morning.

He added that the police had inspected the school according to the standard operating procedure with the help of the K9 Unit.

The school was ordered to immediately evacuate the premises while the police did not find any explosives or suspicious items on site.

“The police believe this is a hoax and the school has been reopened.”

Meanwhile, George Town acting OCPD V. Saravanan said another international school in Batu Ferringhi, Penang has lodged a police report at 9.22am on getting a bomb threat.

“The school had received the threatening email yesterday at 9.42am from an unknown individual. It said there were explosives planted in the school.”

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain yesterday said the authorities received 19 reports over an alleged bomb threat sent to public, private and international schools nationwide via email.

He said the content of the emails sent were similar to a previous incident on November 12 in Jamaica where such threats were sent to 70 schools using the same email service provider.

He added that the emails received by the schools here were sent from an account using the name “taktstorer”, a German term meaning “disturber of the peace” from the beeble.com email service provider.

Police investigations so far, Razarudin said, have confirmed that the bomb threat was a hoax, with no evidence found to indicate the existence of a bomb at any of the schools’ premises.

The case is being investigated under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by anonymous communication and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 on the improper use of network facilities. – November 22, 2023
