Survey findings heeded, not easy managing 32 mil population: Anwar

This in response to Merdeka Center’s finding that unity govt’s approval rating down to 41%

PUTRAJAYA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he has taken note of the views in a recent survey that showed greater disappointment with the unity government after one year in power.

“The survey (involved only) 1,200 people… we hear their views, but we have to manage 32 million people,” Anwar said today, referring to the country’s population.

The survey in October, by the Merdeka Center and released recently, polled 1,220 registered voters and found that the federal government’s approval rating stood at 41% compared to 54% in December last year, soon after it was formed following the 15th general election.

Anwar was asked to comment on the survey by reporters who met him outside the Surau Al-Furqan in Putrajaya, after performing his Friday prayers today.

Other findings in the survey were that 31% of those surveyed think the country is headed in the right direction, while Anwar’s personal approval rating as prime minister had dropped to 50% from 68% in December last year.

The survey was released days before Anwar marks his one year in office today.

The Merdeka Center said the 1,220 registered voters surveyed comprised 52% Malay, 29% Chinese, 7% Indian, 6% Muslim Bumiputera and 6% non-Muslim Bumiputera from Sabah and Sarawak to reflect the national electoral profile, and allowed for a 2.81% margin of error. It added that the survey was funded by the company’s own resources. – November 24, 2023
