Bukit Tinggi suffers major flooding following heavy downpour, causing road closures

Bentong MP prompts authorities to act following similar flooding incident in February

KUALA LUMPUR – A heavy downpour and thunderstorms lasting several hours last night caused areas such as Bukit Tinggi and Bentong to suffer major flooding, forcing road closure due to the torrential waters.

Posting several tweets via X (formerly Twitter), Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman said floods hit the Bukit Tinggi police station and its surrounding areas at about 10pm.

“I have contacted the ministry and government agency involved to conduct a follow up on the incident.

“I was informed that the officer-in-charge (OCS) of the Bukit Tinggi police station and personnel were at the location. Assistance was also rendered by the Genting Highlands police station and Bentong police station, which deployed its MPV while the Bentong traffic police will be at the location to facilitate traffic movements,” she tweeted last night.

Additionally, she also shared photos and videos showing torrential mud water hitting residential areas.

She also highlighted that the road leading to Janda Baik was cut off due to a combination of landslides and fallen trees that also blocked the way.

Two hours later, Young Syefura – who is better known as Rara – said she went down to the area to meet affected residents and find out the latest with the situation.

“Even though the water seems to be receding and cleaning work is underway, torrential water from the top of the hill is still coming down fast,” she tweeted.

Previously, it was reported that this was not the first time severe flooding had hit the area, as it had most recently taken place on February 12.

The then-incident prompted Rara, through a previous statement, to request the state and federal government through relevant ministries and agencies to immediately investigate the cause of the repeating flood incidents.

She had said investigations were necessary to identify if there was any exploration or land clearing at the top of the hill, which precipitated the disaster. – November 26, 2023
