Cops nab two over insult to Agong, death threat against Anwar

TikTok user had allegedly offered RM5 mil bounty to kill PM and cabinet members

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have detained two men to assist in investigations following separate statements that were deemed insulting to the king as well as a criminal threat issued against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a statement, today, Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said the duo, aged 34 and 37, were arrested separately.

The first arrest was made on November 26 involving the suspected owner of the Facebook account “Cik Mat Cik Po”, who was arrested in Kota Bharu, Kelantan on suspicion of uploading a seditious comment against the king.

Razaruddin said the suspect has been placed under remand until November 30 and is being probed under the Sedition Act and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act for the improper use of network facilities.

Meanwhile, Razarudin said the second arrest, also in Kota Bharu, involved the suspected owner of the TikTok account “@jaiadani89,” who was detained today following a criminal threat issued against Anwar.

The second suspect will also be remanded until November 30.

The case for the second suspect, he said, is being probed under Section 507 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by anonymous communication and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.

“Both cases are being investigated by Bukit Aman’s classified crime investigation unit and criminal investigation department.

“We advise and remind the public against any speculation on the cases that could disrupt investigations.

“The public should also be more aware and cautious with regard to sensitive issues that can disrupt public peace and national security,” he added.

On Sunday, PKR Youth lodged a police report against a social media user for allegedly making death threats and putting up a RM5 million bounty for the killings of Anwar and his cabinet members.

Deputy PKR Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim said the report was lodged by a representative from the party wing at the Putrajaya police headquarters.

“The report was made against a video posted on TikTok where a user by the name of @jaiadani89 made death threats against the prime minister and offered RM5 million to anyone who manages to kill (Anwar),” Kamil said during a press conference at the party’s annual congress on November 26.

“There were many comments (in the post) that not only threatened the prime minister’s safety, but also touched on sensitive racial and religious issues,” he said, noting that the video has since been removed.

Urging authorities to investigate the matter, Kamil, who is also Anwar’s political secretary, said that “hatred” was the reason why the video had been posted by the user. – November 28, 2023
