Over 500 evacuated as flash floods hit five villages in Johor

Two relief centres have been opened to shelter victims from 158 families

JOHOR BAHRU – Heavy rain since last night caused five villages in this district to be hit by flash floods, with several rivers at danger and alert levels and 538 people from 158 families being housed at two temporary flood relief centres.

The affected villages are Kg Paya Kenangan, Kg Pasir Tebrau, Kg Kangkar Tebrau, Kg Sentosa Damai, and Kg Sentosa Barat. 

According to the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), the relief centre at Dewan Muafakat Kg Cahaya Baru was opened at about 8am while the one at SK Bukit Mutiara was opened around 10 am. 

As of noon today, 311 evacuees from 78 families from Kg Paya Kenangan, Kg Pasir Tebrau and Kg Kangkar Tebrau are still sheltering at the SK Bukit Mutiara relief centre. 

A total of 227 people from 80 families from Kg Sentosa Damai and Kg Sentosa Barat are placed at the Dewan Muafakat Kg Cahaya Baru relief centre, the SDMC said in a statement. 

Meanwhile, it stated that water levels at Sg Skudai in Kg Laut hit 2.55m while Parit Keliling in Kg Pasir reached 0.29m – both at alert levels. 

Sg Siku in Kg Murni Jaya, near Kulai, meanwhile, is at a danger level of 17.88m while Sg Muar in Kg Awat is at an alert level of 8.03m. – December 1, 2023
