Christmas crisis: M’sia requests turkeys from Turkiye amid shortage

Fuziah Salleh confirms this as US bans imports due to bird flu, local farm unable to meet demands

KUALA LUMPUR – A persistent shortage of turkey continues to disrupt holiday plans for Christmas celebrants in the country.

Deputy Domestic Trade and Costs of Living Minister Fuziah Salleh confirmed the supply scarcity in a media report recently, despite there being a turkey farm in Perak.

The turkey shortage, she said, is due to the ban on importing the bird from the US since 2021 – as turkeys grown in the States are infected with bird flu, and the turkey farm in Perak is only producing up to 1,000 turkeys.

“So, the turkeys from the United States could not be exported (to Malaysia), which is why we have a slight problem with the supply.

“However, the Agriculture and Food Security Ministry has sent an application to Turkiye to import their turkeys.

“It’s just that the supplies of turkey are not able to be imported (from Turkiye) yet,” she said. – December 2, 2023
