MetMalaysia warns thunderstorms, strong winds set to hit 10 states till evening

Dept also issues ‘significant' weather forecast for Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang

KUALA LUMPUR – The Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a warning for thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds in 10 states.

The warning, posted on Facebook at 3.05pm, predicts heavy rain until 6pm today. The 10 affected states include Selangor, Johor, Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Terengganu, Pahang, Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak.

The warning is activated when signs of a thunderstorm with rain intensity exceeding 20mm/hour are observed, expected to persist for more than an hour. A thunderstorm warning is a short-term advisory valid for a period not exceeding six hours for a single issuance.

Some of the affected areas include Selangor (Hulu Selangor and Gombak), Johor (Segamat and Mersing), and Kedah (Kubang Pasu, Padang Terap, Sik and Baling). Other affected regions include Perak (Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Kampar, Batang Padang and Muallim), Terengganu (Dungun and Kemaman), Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Jerantut and Kuantan).

Additionally, Sabah’s rural areas (Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu and Beaufort), west coast (Papar) and Sandakan (Telupid, Kinabatangan and Sandakan), and Sarawak’s Kuching, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei (Pakan), Sibu (Selangau), Mukah (Mukah), Bintulu (Tatau), Miri (Marudi) and Limbang (Lawas) are also affected.

Meanwhile, MetMalaysia issued a “significant” weather forecast for Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang.

MetMalaysia Director-General Muhammad Helmi Abdullah, in a 3.15pm Facebook post, said that wind concentration is expected to occur on the east coast of the peninsula from December 6 to 8, based on weather model analysis.

This may increase humidity, potentially bringing continuous rain to the affected area. MetMalaysia advised the public to always refer to its website and social media, as well as download the myCuaca app for the latest, verified information. – December 4, 2023
