Apartment residents plead for beefed up security after Zayn Rayyan’s tragic death

Residents of Idaman Apartments moot 24-hour CCTV cameras after area’s first murder

PETALING JAYA – With the murderer of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin still at large, residents of Idaman Apartments are urging the joint management board (JMB) to strengthen the area’s security.

Mohd Ridhuan Jamaluddin, a resident for over 20 years, expressed concern about the first murder case in the area.

He said that in light of Zayn Rayyan’s tragic death, he is willing to contribute financially to improve security.

“I hope that the JMB considers enhancing and upgrading the security system, especially by installing additional CCTV cameras to prevent such tragedies in the future.

“A 24-hour security system with a guard post would be beneficial. Although I understand that this is a low-cost housing area, security is of utmost priority. Given such a system, it would significantly improve safety for the residents. However, considering the financial constraints of a low-cost housing area, we may need some time to implement these security upgrades,” he said.

The father of five emphasised that the area had always been safe during his residency until the recent tragedy.

“I’m still at a loss for words after what just happened. As a father, hearing about such cases is deeply troubling. We initially held onto hope when Zayn went missing, but learning about his death was a shock, especially with small kids. The fact that the perpetrator is still at large is a cause for concern.”

As police continue their investigation into the death of 6-year-old Zayn Rayyan, an autistic child reported missing on December 5 and found dead the following night, residents suggested the need for urgent security enhancements.

Syukri Ibrahim, 36, who has been residing in Block Q since 2006, shared his perspective on the security system’s decline since 2015.

“Before 2015, the security system was tip-top, and we even had our own security bureau. However, I haven’t seen an active bureau since then. Now is the best time to reinforce security by installing CCTV cameras in every building.

“We can’t solely rely on a manned guard post, as they require rest. CCTVs operate for 24 hours, providing constant surveillance. This system is essential for our safety,” Syukri said.

However, he said, Block Q residents have kept up the tradition of ensuring they know their neighbours.

“Whoever moves into Block Q, we (the block’s residents) make it a point to get to know them – so that it’s easy to contact one another in case of emergency.

“But I can’t speak for other blocks, as I’m not sure how they manage their blocks’ security,” he said. – December 11, 2023
