Amirudin’s aide faces charges over claims Ali Rustam convoy blocked traffic

Jay Jay Denis had posted tweets last year alleging police escort had done so for Melaka governor’s car to make U-turn

KUALA LUMPUR – A special officer to Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari is set to face charges at a court in Alor Gajah on Thursday over tweets posted last year involving Melaka governor Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam.

In a Facebook post today, Jay Jay Denis said he had been notified of the charges slightly over a year since the allegedly offensive tweets were posted.

“The charges brought against me fall under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code (statements conducing to public mischief) and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, each carrying a potential imprisonment term of two years and one year, respectively, along with a fine of up to RM50,000.

“I have informed police that I will voluntarily present myself in court this Thursday.”

He also quipped that with the frequent trips to Melaka now, he would compile a list of his go-to asam pedas (spicy and sour stew) spots and share them with the public.

In the alleged tweet, posted on September 6 of last year, Denis claimed that Ali had been in an official car, accompanied by around eight police outriders and three escort cars, that blocked traffic on the Sprint Highway, allowing the Melaka governor’s vehicle to make a U-turn.

In a second tweet, he noted that the person who later emerged from the car was Ali, outside a restaurant where he had attended a family dinner.

“I thought it was an important official national event. But no.”

He also tweeted after his questioning by police that the officers told him they had no choice but to “do this” on orders from “Melaka’s most powerful folks”.

“But this has renewed (my) energy to fight this corrupt system and that corrupt party Umno with all I have,” Denis was reported as saying.

It was reported that he was arrested and taken by three officers from the Alor Gajah police headquarters to Melaka on October 9, where he was questioned over his tweets.

He was released on the same day after questioning, assisted by lawyer Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, among others. – December 12, 2023
