Health Ministry reveals drastic rise in cases, with weekly count escalating from 6,796 to 12,757

KUALA LUMPUR – Covid-19 cases nearly doubled since the previous week following the latest reading between December 3 and December 9, according to the Health Ministry.

The ministry said in a statement today that the number of cases registered that week was 12,757, compared to 6,796 cases between November 26 and December 2.

The overall death rate resulting from Covid-19 between January 25 and December 9 stood at 0.72%.

“In Malaysia, the increase in the number of Covid-19 cases is in line with the trend that occurs at the end of the year, as reported in other countries as well.

“The majority of the Covid-19 cases in Malaysia experience mild symptoms and do not require hospital treatment,” it said.

Meanwhile, the total admission of Covid-19 patients to health facilities for non-critical beds had increased to 1.4%.

The intensive care unit bed admissions had increased by 1.4%, and Covid-19 patients who needed respiratory assistance equipment also increased by 0.5%.

The ministry also announced around 26 new Omicron variants being reported worldwide, including 21 variant of concern cases and five variant of interest cases.

“However, up to now, there are still no new variants detected in Malaysia.

”The variant in Malaysia is Omicron, with sub-variants XBB.1.16, XBB.1.5, and EG.5.

“This variant has a high infectivity rate; however, it does not cause severe effects,” it said.

The ministry also advised the public to maintain good hygiene by always washing their hands with water and soap or sanitising them.

“When heading to crowded places, the public is advised to wear masks, especially those who have symptoms, to avoid infecting high-risk individuals such as senior citizens, chronic disease patients, individuals with low immunity, and pregnant women.” – December 13, 2023
