Selangor Perhilitan rescues clouded leopard wounded by motorcycle

Listed as ‘vulnerable’ by international bodies, the wildcat was saved with the aid of Fire and Rescue personnel

11:01 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Selangor Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) successfully rescued an injured clouded leopard after it was hit by a motorcycle in Semenyih on Wednesday.

According to Perhilitan’s Facebook page today, its Selangor office received information from the Semenyih Fire and Rescue Department regarding the incident involving the feline wildcat.

Selangor Perhilitan officers deployed to the site of the accident successfully rescued the leopard with the aid of Fire and Rescue personnel.

“After conducting further checks, the female clouded leopard weighing approximately 30kg suffered minor injuries on its body and jaw.

“The leopard was shifted to a cage before being sent to the National Wildlife Rescue Centre (NWRC) in Sungkai, Perak for further treatment.”

The clouded leopard is classified as a fully protected species under Schedule 2, Act 716, Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 and is classified under the ‘𝑣𝑢𝑙𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒’ status in the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)’s Redlist.

This means that this species faces a high risk of habitat loss and other threats that cause population decline for the wildcat species.

In Malaysia, the clouded leopard is the third largest species of wildcat after the Malayan tiger and Indochinese leopard.

There are approximately 10,000 clouded leopards left in the wild throughout its native habitat of India, China and Southeast Asia. – December 16, 2023
