Teen’s father and sister believe police officer intentionally rammed into him

KUALA LUMPUR – The family of 17-year-old Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie wants the senior cop, who has been remanded over the Form 5 student’s death, investigated for murder.

Zaharif’s father, Muhd Zamrie Zainal Abidin, 55, said the Section 302 of the Penal Code should be used as there could be no other intent for the police officer to ram into his son.

“If he purposely hit my son, it means that he has the intention to kill him,” Muhd Zamrie was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times at his home in Taman Chepor Sentosa, Ipoh, today.

Zaharif’s sister, Nur Zawani Muhd Zamrie, said she saw the police officer’s face when she was at the scene of crash which occurred at Jalan Taman Jati, Ipoh, on Friday.

“He didn’t look nervous. If a person hits someone unintentionally, he would panic and be scared. But he looked calm and satisfied with what he had done,” said the 28-year-old, who is a nurse and was attending to Zaharif at the scene.

She reiterated that the case should be investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

The remand order for the 44-year-old police officer who drove the car into Zaharif ends tomorrow.

The teen had been riding his Yamaha motorcycle after leaving his school, SMK Jati in Meru, Ipoh, en route to a mosque for Friday prayers when the police officer, who was driving a Perodua Ativa, rammed into him.

The suspect was remanded yesterday and police have so far said that the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving.

Zaharif died at the scene while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

His family said today that they have engaged a lawyer, Datuk Wan Azmir Wan Majid, from the firm Hafarizam Wan & Aisha Mubarak , to sue the suspect, the police and the government.

Bernama, meanwhile, reported that the senior police officer is a deputy superintendent at the Kedah police contingent headquarters. – December 17, 2023
