KUALA LUMPUR – A senior police officer will be charged with the murder of 17-year-old Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie in the Ipoh Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, according to the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC).

In a statement tonight, the AGC said there was enough evidence to charge the 44-year-old officer under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

“After reviewing evidence presented in the investigation paper, the AGC has found that there is sufficient evidence for a murder charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code on the suspect.

“As such, the suspect will tentatively be charged under Section 302 at the Ipoh Magistrate Court on Monday, December 18, 2023.

“The magistrate court then will set a date to transfer the case to the Ipoh High Court for trial,” the AGC said.

The case had been investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving, following the arrest of a senior police officer after the incident on Friday.

Witnesses saw the officer, who is reportedly a deputy superintendent at the Kedah police contingent headquarters, ramming the Perodua Ativa he was driving into Zaharif who was riding a Yamaha motorcycle.

The teen had left his school, SMK Jati in Meru, Ipoh, and was en route to a mosque for Friday prayers.

An autopsy found that Zaharif had sustained chest and abdominal injuries caused by the crash, leading to his death at the scene. – December 17, 2023
