Masking not a must on public transport, but much encouraged: Loke

Transport minister says such policies can only be set by Health Ministry

1:33 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – For now, wearing masks is not compulsory but encouraged when taking public transport, reiterated Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

He said wearing masks is still encouraged for those taking public transport following the recent increase in Covid-19 cases nationwide, reported Bernama.

“Any policy or regulation regarding the use of face masks can only be set by the Health Ministry. The Transport Ministry does not set a policy on this.

“So far, it is not compulsory (to wear a face mask while in public transport). So, it is up to the passengers or the public,” he said after attending an event here today.

Yesterday, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the Covid-19 infections in Malaysia are under control and are not burdening public health facilities.

He added that the government does not plan to reintroduce restrictions such as movement control orders despite the rise in cases.

Between December 10 and 16, there were a total of 20,696 Covid-19 cases, which was a 62.2% increase compared to the previous week. – December 19, 2023
