Police round up hundreds of undocumented migrants in massive raid at Jalan Silang

Over 1,000 personnel conduct surprise operation, targeting those residing, working with invalid documents

4:19 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Police conducted a surprise raid and rounded up hundreds of undocumented foreigners in a massive operation at Jalan Silang earlier today.

The operation in the city centre here was carried out by reportedly more than 1,000 personnel from the Royal Malaysia Police’s General Operations Force as well as other related agencies.

According to a post on X (formerly Twitter) by Bernama, police raided their living quarters in a move to track down those residing and working here on invalid documents.

The national news agency also shared a picture of a group of supposedly detained foreigners sitting on the ground, surrounded by enforcement personnel.

The Star, meanwhile, reported that 500 were detained as of 1pm and were sent to the Police Training Centre for further action.

The daily added that the operation was conducted to curb illegal activities and screen businesses either owned by or employing foreigners, with authorities raiding four blocks of shops and cordoning off the area.

Since this morning, netizens have taken to social media to share images and videos allegedly depicting the operation, with some questioning the large number of armed police presence while others sought information on the line of police trucks blocking the road in the area. – December 21, 2023
