Fatal bite: woman dies after eating stale sandwich at R&R Kemaman

State health authorities tell public to be more savvy when choosing where to eat

12:33 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – A woman has died after eating a spoiled sandwich bought from a highway rest area (R&R) in Kemaman, Terengganu.

The state Health Department confirmed that the 54-year-old woman suffered from food poisoning after eating, and experienced stomach ache, diarrhoea, and vomiting.

In response, state department director Datuk Dr Kasemani Embong said the Kemaman health office had combed through the premises to identify the lead cause.

“Several food samples, as well as swabs of equipment and food handlebars were taken to assist the investigation. The department is still waiting for the results of the samples,” she said in a statement today.

Kasemani urged all food operators to constantly prioritise cleanliness and safety when preparing meals.

She also called on the public to be more savvy when selecting eateries, by only patronising those that are clean and practise food safety.

“The public is also advised to practise the ‘see, smell, and taste’ concept before eating, to avoid consuming spoiled food.”

Previously, someone published a viral Facebook post claiming that their aunt had passed away from food poisoning, after consuming a spoiled sandwich bought at the Perasing R&R in Chukai, Kemaman.

The victim, a Johorean woman, was believed to have died when receiving treatment at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu on December 19. – December 23, 2023
