Nearly 9,800 Penang households remain without water on Christmas eve morning

Penangites are already expecting another water cut in early January

KUALA LUMPUR – Taps remain dry on Christmas eve for nearly 9,800 households in Penang as the water supply has yet to be fully restored for 11 areas as of 6am today.

Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) said in a Facebook post that this is due to the areas being located on high ground or at the end of the pipeline.

The affected areas are Alor Vista, Sungai Ara, Jalan Dato Ismail Hashim, Setia Pearl island, Genting Reservoir, Pulau Betong, Batu Itam, Jalan Pondok Upeh, Flat Lily, Bukit Penara and Batu Maung’s Bandar Cassia.

PBAPP had announced an unscheduled water disruption on December 19, affecting around 200,000 users in select areas of Penang district and Seberang Perai due to a burst pipe in Sg Perai.

The burst pipe, a critical component delivering treated water from the Sg Dua Water Treatment Plant to the third Penang Twin Submarine pipelines, spans from Butterworth on the mainland to the Macallum area on Penang Island.

However, the ongoing water supply disruption has left those affected hot under the collar, leading to some of them venting on social media, especially accounts belonging to PBAPP and Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

Frustrated customers have also urged PBAPP to provide concrete information on when water supply would be fully restored in their respective areas.

Some Penangites have raised concerns over an upcoming scheduled supply disruption from January 10 (6am) to 14 (6am) due to urgent water works at the Sg Dua water treatment plant.

About 590,000 consumers on Penang island and mainland Seberang Perai will be affected by the development, as PBAPP has to shut down the water treatment plant to replace two units of 1,200mm control valves that are leaking. – December 24, 2023
