Hundreds of migrant workers arrested in Johor after sighted walking along road

Foreigners were reportedly walking to police station to lodge report against job agent who cheated them

KUALA LUMPUR – Police have arrested hundreds of foreign workers who claimed to have been cheated by their job agent after being spotted walking in droves around Kota Tinggi, Johor, recently.

The video of the workers walking along the roadside went viral recently, triggering various reactions from netizens, who were mostly concerned about public safety.

Kota Tinggi district police chief Superintendent Hussin Zamora told Sinar Harian the incident occurred on Wednesday (December 20).

Hussin said following a police report lodged by the military, a police team was deployed to the scene for further investigations.

“Yes (the incident did happen), the video which went viral recently happened last week. The group (of foreign workers) were on their way to the Bayu Damai police station to lodge a report against their job agent who apparently cheated them and failed to get them jobs.

“The incident occurred on Wednesday (December 20) morning, after hundreds of Bangladeshis were spotted walking on foot at the entrance of Teluk Ramunia Bayu Damai, here.

“Following checks by the Immigration Department, 171 Bangladeshi nationals aged between 19 to 43 were detained for further investigations under Section 15(1)(c) Immigration Act 1959/63,” he said in a statement today.

Hussin added all those involved were sent to the Setia Tropika Immigration Department in Johor Bahru for further investigations. – December 25, 2023
