KUALA LUMPUR – Premier shopping mall Pavilion Kuala Lumpur has temporarily closed off a section of its concourse area following an incident in which a suspended Christmas decoration fell on a patron.

In a statement, the mall’s management said the move was made to allow a thorough inspection of the installation and ensure the safety of customers.

The Singaporean man, Julius Lee, 44, sustained minor injuries when a hanging decorative Christmas tree fell on his head.

The incident occurred while Lee was taking photos of his wife, Aileen Tan, 39, and their 3-year-old daughter near the decoration.

Pavilion KL management said it had swiftly responded to the situation, ensuring immediate medical attention for the injured shopper.

It said the mall’s medical and safety team accompanied Lee to the nearest clinic, and the management expressed appreciation for the prompt action taken.

“We are in communication with the shopper and his family to ensure his well-being. A comprehensive inspection will be conducted on all decorations to guarantee their safety and integrity.”

Following the incident, the area around the fallen Christmas tree was closed off to ensure the safety of mall-goers.

Pavilion KL emphasised its commitment to taking all necessary precautionary measures to prioritise the safety and security of shoppers during the year-end festivities.

Aileen Tan, Lee’s wife, expressed their surprise at the incident, saying: “We didn’t expect the Christmas tree to fall.”

She confirmed that her husband was immediately taken to the clinic by the mall’s management.

Pavilion KL concluded its statement by assuring the public that safety and security remain their utmost priority, and they will continue to implement measures to ensure a secure and enjoyable shopping experience for visitors during the festive season. – December 25, 2023
