No permit needed for ‘Aksi Solidariti: Kepung Demi Palestin’ rally, organisers insist

Muda sec-gen says they only need to inform police, but officers at station refuse to accept letters outside of working hours

11:08 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The organisers of the “Aksi Solidariti: Kepung Demi Palestin” protest say they have submitted a notice to the police regarding the six-day rally which is scheduled to take place in front of the United States (US) Embassy, starting tomorrow.

Muda secretary-general, Amir Hariri Abd Hadi, said that the rally would be a peaceful assembly that did not require any permit under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

He said the organisers only needed to inform the police, and that they had gone to the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters and Dang Wangi police headquarters yesterday.

“But they (the authorities) have refused to accept letters because they would only receive them during working days and working hours,” he told Scoop when contacted today.

Amir also said that a notice had been sent to the Home Ministry, informing them of the rally.

He added that the organisers will hold a press conference at about 11pm tomorrow, to announce the programme flow for the next five days.

The #KepungDemiPalestin rally, which starts tomorrow, is organised by 48 non-governmental organisations (NGO), including student movements and political organisations.

Earlier today, Amir took to social media platform X to announce the holding of the rally, which is intended to demand a ceasefire in Gaza, following the Israeli regime’s ongoing atrocities being committed against the Palestinians.

“See you all at 10 o’clock tomorrow night in front of the Tabung Haji mosque. Let’s all unite for Palestine. We demand a ceasefire, now!” he said in a posting

In response, Wangsa Maju district police chief Ashari Abu Samah confirmed that his team had not received any application from any party regarding the rally – December 25, 2023
