Youth and Sports Minister singles out five individuals who impacted her and the nation in various ways

8:58 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – As Malaysians reflect on challenges and losses faced in 2023, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh pays tribute to a group of individuals who played significant roles in the political landscape.

In a heartfelt post on her Facebook page, she expressed the profound impact that PAS’ Dr Abd Rani Osman, former Domestic Trade and Cost of Living minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub of Amanah, and Haris Ibrahim of Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia had on her life, shaping her beliefs and ideals.

Former Meru assemblyman Abd Rani died on January 23 during a family holiday after battling diabetes and heart disease, while the sudden demise of Salahuddin in Alor Setar on July 23 left many in shock.

On August 5, Haris, a lawyer and social activist, passed away after battling cancer for over a year.

Hannah also remembered JM Noel, a supporter and community leader from Subang Jaya, and Kenneth Yu, a friend from her church, both of whom she said contributed significantly to their respective communities.

“As year 2023 draws to an end, I cannot help but think of the good friends I have lost in the last 12 months. (Except) for Haris who was unwell for months, the rest left quite suddenly.

“Dr Abd Rani Osman (PAS), Salahuddin Ayub (Amanah), Haris Ibrahim (Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia), JM Noel a supporter and community leader from Subang Jaya and Kenneth (Yu), my friend from church.

“These gentlemen have made my life richer in friendship, dreams and ideals for Malaysia.

“My belief system has been shaped one way or another through years of engagement and time spent with them. Each one of them deeply cared for their community and nation,” said the DAP MP representing Segambut.

Hannah’s message ended with a call to remember these faces and the kindness they embodied.

She encouraged Malaysians not to forget these individuals, emphasising their loyalty to the causes they loved.

“I have no agenda in posting this apart from wanting Malaysia to remember these faces. Don’t forget them. They were kind Malaysians. I love their loyalty to the cause they loved.

“Some days I want to send them a WhatsApp message but they are no (longer) here.

“Life is very short, live every day as though it is your last. May 2024 be kinder.” – December 27, 2023
