Baby among 567 undocumented migrants detained in Bangsar raid

Authorities screen 1,000 foreigners for various immigration offences, including not having valid travel documents

2:07 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Kuala Lumpur Immigration Department rounded up 567 undocumented migrants, including a 16-month-old baby, at a residential building in Abdullah Hukum, Jalan Bangsar, in a pre-dawn operation this morning.

KL Immigration director Syamsul Badrin Mohshin said the raid was conducted at 1.15am by 85 enforcement officers.

“During the operation, 1,000 foreigners were screened and 252 Bangladeshis, 163 Nepalese, 75 Myanmar nationals, 72 Indonesians, four Filipinos and one Indian national were detained for various immigration offences, including not having valid travel documents.

“All the foreigners aged between four months and 55 years have been taken to the immigration detention depot in Bukit Jalil for further investigation,” Bernama reported him saying after the operation.

Syamsul also said that the raid was carried out after a week of gathering intelligence based on complaints from residents about the influx of foreigners in the area.

Enforcement officers spent three hours checking the apartment building’s 14 storeys, he added.

The New Straits Times, meanwhile, reported that among those detained was a baby. The oldest detainee was a 55-year-old. Thirty-eight women were also detained.

Syamsul told NST that some of those detained had entered Malaysia using social visit passes but also held jobs without work permits.

Some of those rounded up lived in groups of eight to 10 people per apartment unit.

This morning’s raid follows the massive operation on business premises in Jalan Silang in the city centre on December 21, in which 1,101 foreigners were arrested. Of the number, 600 of them had legal action taken against them for a lack of required documentation.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said yesterday that more raids to apprehend undocumented migrants are planned, as police have identified at least 10 locations nationwide where they live and gather. – December 30, 2023
