[UPDATED] ‘Padu registration to proceed as is, cabinet decides against temporary shutdown’

Fahmi Fadzil says issues on system have been addressed promptly as needed

PUTRAJAYA – The government has no plans to halt the registration process for its Central Database Hub (Padu), as suggested by DAP’s former two-time MP Ong Kian Ming.

In dismissing the proposal, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said during today’s meeting, the cabinet found that issues relating to the system have been addressed swiftly whenever necessary.

“We found that the (Padu) system is running smoothly (while) addressing security concerns remains a top priority for the Economy Ministry and the team behind Padu,” Fahmi told a press conference at his ministry’s compound, here, today.

“Cabinet also congratulated the figures behind Padu’s success as they have worked hard to ensure that the system is ready for use.

“Cabinet decided against postponing (the Padu registration). It will continue as is,” added Fahmi, who is also the unity government’s spokesman.

Earlier today, Ong called for the registration of Padu users to be suspended until concerns over potential identity theft and other security issues are resolved.

The former investment, trade and industry deputy minister asserted that the system should be properly tested for any flaws before it is made available to the public again.

Ong also criticised the number of details citizens need to input in Padu, saying some information should already be available through ministries and government agencies.

Yesterday, Ong conducted a supposed experiment to reiterate his belief that Padu, which was launched yesterday, brings the risk of identity theft.

The Padu system enables the production of more accurate data analytics, facilitates data-driven policy formulation, and enhances decision-making processes while supporting targeted policy implementation to balance the nation’s fiscal position.

All citizens aged 18 and above must register, make data revisions, and verify 39 necessary details on Padu’s portal within three months of its launch. – January 3, 2024
