Cops to question 15 politicians, activists over Kepung Demi Palestin rally: Muda sec-gen

Among those summoned are Amir Hariri Abdul Hadi, Chua Tian Chang, Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan, Hasbie Muda

KUALA LUMPUR – A total of 15 individuals have been summoned for police questioning regarding last week’s six-day Kepung Demi Palestin rally outside the United States Embassy on Jalan Tun Razak.

Among those scheduled to provide their statements at the Dang Wangi police headquarters tomorrow morning are Muda secretary-general Amir Hariri Abdul Hadi, former Batu MP Chua Tian Chang and former Malaysian Bar chief Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

Amanah Youth chief Hasbie Muda, MCA Youth deputy chief Mike Chong, and Parti Sosialis Malaysia secretary-general A. Sivarajan have also been called in, according to a post by Amir on social media platform X.

On December 27, the second day of the rally, Wangsa Maju police chief Ashari Abu Samah said police had opened an investigation paper concerning the solidarity picket.

The investigation paper was opened under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for organising an event without a permit.

Meanwhile, Muda, in another tweet, issued an invite to followers to show solidarity for those roped in for investigations at Dang Wangi tomorrow morning.

On the first day of the gathering, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid said that while police sympathise with the struggle of the Palestinian struggle, authorities have a responsibility to ensure public order and the safety of foreign diplomats in the country.

The rally, an initiative by concerned Malaysian citizens regarding the ongoing crisis in Gaza, was also joined by a total of 48 NGOs comprising community, youth, and student organisations, as well as various political groups.

More than 100 countries voted for a United Nations resolution for a ceasefire, while the US has repeatedly vetoed UN Security Council resolutions on the same issue. – January 4, 2024
