Housewife charged with throwing kitten from Cheras flat

Incident occurred on Dec 25, and the accused, Nina Norhaslinda Mazlan, has pleaded not guilty

1:58 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – A housewife was charged in the sessions court today with killing a kitten by throwing it from a flat.

Nina Norhaslinda Mazlan, 44, was charged under Section 29(1)(e) of the Animal Welfare Act 2015 with causing unreasonable suffering to the kitten, which she hurled from the first floor of the Sri Sabah flat in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur.

She was alleged to have committed the act on December 25 last year, around 7.35am.

Nina, who was unrepresented, pleaded not guilty to the charge before sessions court judge Norina Zainol Abidin and was ordered to post RM10,000 bail.

If convicted, she faces a maximum of three years in jail, a fine between RM20,000 and RM100,000, or both.

The Kuala Lumpur Veterinary Services Department is the prosecutor in this case, and its prosecuting officer, Fadzilah Abdul Karim, appealed to the court today for RM15,000 in bail for the accused.

Fadzilah also asked the court to impose additional conditions on Nina, including having her passport handed over and reporting herself to a police station once a month.

Nina told the court she had no monthly income, after which the court lowered the bail order to RM10,000. The court also fixed February 6 for case mention.

Speaking to reporters later, Fadzilah said the kitten died after it was thrown out of the building and that Nina’s reasons for her actions are unknown. – January 5, 2024
