Cabinet sternly condemns arson attack on Ngeh’s home

Fahmi Fadzil warns citizens against fuelling sentiments, inciting actions violating the law

4:06 PM MYT

PUTRAJAYA – The cabinet has strongly condemned the arson attack on the residence of Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham in Ayer Tawar, Perak, which took place this morning.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, who also serves as the spokesperson for the unity government, emphasised the importance of respecting the law, even when individuals hold differing opinions.

“Citizens should refrain from fueling sentiments or inciting actions that violate the law, especially against those with opposing views,” Fahmi told a press conference today.

“The cabinet has issued a stern warning that individuals found breaking the law will face legal consequences.”

In the incident that occurred around 3am, Ngeh’s residence was targeted with a Molotov cocktail, resulting in the complete loss of one vehicle and damage to two others, along with parts of his house. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

The DAP lawmaker posted an update on his Facebook account, reassuring the public that the situation was under control.

“The fire, which occurred at the residence of Beruas MP, took place past midnight. The fire has been extinguished, and there are no reported injuries,” read the statement posted on his account today.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri confirmed that the police are actively pursuing the individual responsible for the arson incident.

He said the case is being investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for committing mischief by fire, adding that a thorough inquiry will be conducted. – January 10, 2024
