Penang water woes: 84% consumers expected to have normal supply by Saturday

KUALA LUMPUR – Water supply could return to normal on Saturday morning for 84% of consumers in Penang affected by a scheduled disruption ahead of the January 14 deadline.

Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) chief executive officer K. Pathmanantan said teams had worked overnight on pipeline repairs and aimed to see supply restored for the majority of consumers on January 13.

“PBAPP is targeting to normalise water supply for 495,065 consumers (84% of the 590,000 affected consumers) in Seberang Perai and on Penang Island by 6am on Saturday,” he said in a statement.

He said that restoring supply to that many consumers is possible now that a 1.35m hole in the underwater pipeline at Sg Perai has been successfully sealed.

The scheduled water disruption has been announced since last month to facilitate valve replacement works at the Sg Lua water treatment plant as well as repairs at other parts along the main pipeline that have not been replaced for 50 years. – January 11, 2024
