Two cops investigated for rape, extortion of college students, suspended from duty

KUALA LUMPUR – Two policemen arrested in connection with the rape of a foreign student and extortion of her male friend have been suspended, Selangor police said.

Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed the suspensions to Bernama, adding that the two officers will have to clear criminal and disciplinary investigations before returning to work.

“Yes, both of them have been suspended from duty,” Hussein was quoted as saying.

The policemen hold the ranks of constable and lance corporal, he added.

Investigations into the incident at Bukit Ampang View, here on Tuesday, will also involve taking the statements of the two officers’ superiors.

The officers, in their 20s and 30s, were arrested yesterday and remanded for seven days. 

In the January 9 incident, at around 10.09pm, the victim and her male friend, both private college students, were apprehended by the two male suspects in full uniform, who then took them to a secluded location separately.

The female student was raped by one police officer while the male friend was taken by the other officer to a bank to settle payments, supposedly for a traffic offence. 

Investigations are being conducted under Section 376 of the Penal Code for rape, and Section 395/397 of the same code for gang robbery and armed robbery. 

The penalty for a rape conviction is imprisonment for up to 20 years and whipping, while for robbery it is a maximum of 20 years in jail, with the possibility of a fine or whipping. – January 12, 2024
