IPOH – The Fire and Rescue Department’s full report on the arson attack on Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham’s residence is to be completed this week.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department director Sayani Saidon told Bernama this yesterday evening, adding that the department had conducted its own probe and would be updating the police on it.
The department’s probe includes an analysis of the primary material evidence, namely the Molotov cocktail retrieved from the crime scene of the January 10 attack at 3am.
“The department has conducted a comprehensive investigation. We are just waiting to verify the material contained in the two items of evidence sent to the lab in Kuala Lumpur.
“Based on the SOP (standard operating procedure), it takes 10 days to obtain the results. So it may take another two or three days for us to conclude the report,” he told reporters in Meru Raya yesterday.
Sayani said the department’s investigation was focused on identifying if there was any element of mischief in the cause of the fire.
“If the lab results show any element of mischief at the scene, we will update the police for further action,” he said.
No one at Ngeh’s residence was injured in the arson attack, but a Mercedes Benz car was completely destroyed, while two other vehicles were partially damaged, as well as the ceiling of the porch area.
The attack followed controversy over Ngeh’s proposal that non-Muslim legal experts be included as members of a special government committee on the making of shariah laws.
Police have detained one suspect, a man in his 30s from Selangor, to facilitate investigations. According to the police, the man is not affiliated with any political party, and they are still investigating him for the motive behind the alleged arson. – January 16, 2024
