KUALA LUMPUR – Police are investigating one of their senior officers for attempted murder after a 40-year-old woman accused him of pushing her off the Penang Bridge during an argument on Monday.

Both ended up falling into the sea.

Penang police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said checks found that the accused is a 37-year-old senior police officer from out-of-state and the woman is believed to be his girlfriend.

“We believe they got out of the car and started to argue at KM2.8, mainland-bound lane, around 7.45pm on Monday.

“We will investigate and get statements from other witnesses. The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder,” he said in a press conference last night.

Khaw added that the police officer is getting medical treatment at the hospital, and the woman appeared unhurt.

The accused policeman is also facing a criminal case for voluntarily causing hurt under Section 323 of the Penal Code over a recent incident that allegedly happened in Penang.

On Monday, a passer-by witnessed the two falling into the sea and jumped in to help save them. They were all rescued by a fishing boat and taken to the Batu Uban Jetty. – January 17, 2024
