MACC probe into Mirzan Mahathir nothing to do with Betamek

Mirzan has been Betamek’s managing director since January 2022, as well as a major shareholder in the company

KUALA LUMPUR – Ongoing investigations by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against Betamek Bhd managing director Mirzan Mahathir has nothing to do with the company.

In a bourse filing today, the automotive electronics designer and manufacturer assured its customers that it will be continuing its business as per usual. 

“We wish to announce that the said investigation (against Mirzan) is unrelated to Betamek. 

“As such, Betamek operates its business as usual without any interruption on our production and delivery of Betamek’s products to our customers.” 

Mirzan, who has been a managing director at Betamek since January 2022, is also a major shareholder of the company as he holds a direct interest share in Iskandar Holdings Sdn Bhd, which has a 72.03% equity stake in Betamek. 

Yesterday, MACC confirmed its probe against the eldest son of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad is related to Mirzan’s name appearing in the Panama Papers, as well as the sale and acquisition of government-linked companies (GLC). 

Mirzan has since been given a notice to declare all his assets both here and abroad within 30 days.

The probe is being conducted under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act (AMLATFPUAA) 2001.

News of the MACC’s investigations into Mirzan began appearing in blogs and a Hong Kong tabloid website late last month. – January 19, 2024
