200,000 Penang consumers hit with yet another water cut

Chief minister says supply disruption is ‘sudden mishap’, not a scheduled water supply interruption

KUALA LUMPUR – Southwest Penang island and parts of southern Seberang Perai are in for another water cut, just over a week after the scheduled four-day water supply disruption earlier this month.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the new disruption was due to a major leak that was just detected on a section of the underwater pipeline that channels water from the mainland to Penang island.

“A sudden mishap has occurred at Sgi Perai. Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has detected a sudden major leak on the 1,350mm underwater pipeline section. PBAPP is striving to pump water through the pipeline at minimal flow.

“This exercise is likely to cause a water supply disruption for about 200,000 consumers in the Southwest District of Penang Island and some areas in southern Seberang Perai,” Chow said in the state’s newsletter, Bulletin Mutiara.

He stressed that today’s supply disruption is “sudden mishap” and not a scheduled water supply interruption by PBAPP.

Penang has recently had a spate of water supply disruptions due to works to repair or replace ageing pipeline infrastructure.

It had a scheduled water supply disruption from January 10 to 14 for repair and maintenance, which affected 590,000 users. – January 23, 2024
