Shed otherism, go for understanding and moderation, says PAS on Thaipusam eve

Opposition party marks celebratory occasion with reminder of importance of diversity

KUALA LUMPUR – Opposition party PAS has called for moderation and a tolerant approach to diversity as this brings colour and progress to the country, as Malaysia gears up for Thaipusam tomorrow.

Secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said the festival is yet another manifestation of the diversity that enriches Malaysia’s social fabric, allowing Malaysians to gain experience when faced with diversity in other parts of the world.

“PAS believed that parochial and negative views regarding others will arise… whether related to their beliefs, culture, political tendencies or even citizenship issues.

“Such views will likely remain on the fringe and only temporary. Only if all parties continue to exercise moderation, instead of blowing it out of proportion, or being dragged into emotional and pointless polemics.”

He added that openness towards diversity does not grant any party the licence to ignore, belittle or even challenge the foundations of this country.

“PAS is confident that many conflicts and tensions can be avoided, allowing all parties to enjoy opportunities and benefits in our blessed country.

“Parochialism, extremism or excessive approach are flaws that need to be tempered with moderation, common sense and courtesy, instead of more confrontational voices,” he said in a statement today.

The chariot procession began last night from Sri Maha Mariamman Temple here and is expected to reach Batu Caves as Thaipusam festivities ramp up. – January 24, 2024
