Don’t drag Istana into political drama, Saifuddin chides rally organisers

‘Stop playing victim’ as cops not informed of gathering, home minister tells organisers

PUTRAJAYA – Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has slammed the organisers of yesterday’s gathering at Istana Negara, saying it was unnecessary to drag the palace into political drama.

He also said it was wrong of the organisers to claim that the palace met with representatives to receive a document.

“This has led a palace officer to lodge a police report against those claims. Police will be investigating this,” said the minister in a press conference at his ministry here today.

Saifuddin added that police had opened an investigation paper under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 and a few individuals would be called to give their statements.

“The organisers should stop ‘playing victim’ as they did not inform police of the gathering… that means they didn’t follow the rules.”

The three non-governmental organisations and some 700 people, including former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, showed up at the palace gate yesterday.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Allaudeen Abdul Majid yesterday confirmed receiving a police report on the allegation from Bersatu’s Chegubard that three Perikatan Nasional representatives were summoned for an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Allaudeen said this case would be investigated by Bukit Aman’s classified crime investigation unit.

Allaudeen was asked about a police report lodged by an individual at the Travers police station yesterday against Bersatu information committee member Chegubard, whose real name is Badrul Hisham Shaharin.

Chegubard is said to have made the allegation in a 52-second video uploaded on TikTok under the name “Alias Official.” – January 24, 2024
