Crown Prince Tunku Ismail appointed as Regent of Johor

The 39-year-old will receive the title His Royal Highness Tunku Ismail, the Regent of Johor

JOHOR BAHRU – Johor Crown Prince Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim has been appointed the Regent of Johor in a ceremony at Istana Bukit Serene this morning.

According to the Johor Royal Court Council, Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar gave his consent for the crown prince to ascend to the Johor throne.

“His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim Ibni Almarhum Sultan Iskandar, the Sultan and Sovereign Ruler of the State and Territory of Johor Darul Ta’zim, with the advice of the Johor Royal Court Council, has consented to appoint the Heir to the Throne of Johor, Crown Prince of Johor His Royal Highness Tunku Ismail Ibni Sultan Ibrahim as the Regent of Johor.

“This appointment shall continue for the duration of His Majesty’s reign as Yang di-Pertuan Agong,” Datuk Dr Abdul Rahim Ramli, the Yang di-Pertua of the Johor Royal Court Council said in a statement.

Abdul Rahim said Sultan Ibrahim also consented to the title His Royal Highness Tunku Ismail, the Regent of Johor, for Tunku Ismail.

The title should be used in all government matters, including letters, speeches and prayers.

Tunku Ismail, 39, was born in June 30, 1984, and is the eldest of six children of Sultan Ibrahim and the Permaisuri of Johor, Raja Zarith Sofiah Almarhum Sultan Idris Shah.

He was proclaimed as the Raja Muda of Johor on April 8, 2006, and later as the Crown Prince of Johor on Jan 28, 2010.

He had been appointed regent previously for specific periods when Sultan Ismail took leave from his duties as Johor ruler.

Sultan Ismail will begin a five-year term as the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong this Wednesday. – January 28, 2024
