MACC nabs fake Datuk over alleged RM2.5 mil billboard contract graft

Advertising company director allegedly received RM92,000 in bribes to appoint another company to handle signage installation, maintenance

11:59 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – The Terengganu Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has arrested the director of an advertising company on suspicion of soliciting and accepting bribes totalling RM92,500.

A source from MACC said the bribes were allegedly given in exchange for appointing a company to handle the installation and maintenance of billboards in one of the districts in the state, with a contract value of RM2.5 million.

The source said the suspect, a man in his 60s, was arrested around 11am today at his residence in Batu Caves, Selangor.

Another male suspect believed to be a middleman was also arrested in Kuantan, Pahang, on the same day.

“The suspect, who is in his 60s, is also believed to be using an unrecognised Datuk title and had committed the offence (of using the fake title) in 2020,”

“He was arrested for accepting bribes that were deposited into several bank accounts and the suspect’s company was also offered the installation and maintenance of billboards throughout the country through a federal government ministry.”

Terengganu MACC Director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid, when contacted, confirmed the arrest.

He said that the case is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009.

Both suspects are scheduled to be brought for a remand application at the Kemaman magistrates’ court tomorrow. – January 29, 2024
