Three traffic cops remanded for allegedly soliciting bribe from UK couple

An internal investigation is being conducted, involving Bukit Aman’s Integrity and Standards Compliance Department

KUALA LUMPUR – Three traffic police officers have been remanded for three days, starting today, to assist in investigations into the alleged soliciting of RM100 to settle a fine from well-known YouTubers from the United Kingdom (UK) who were taking a road trip through the country.

Perak police chief Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the apprehended policemen from the Perak police Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) range in ages from 37 to 42.

According to him, the trio is being remanded until February 1 to assist in the incident that occured at Jalan Simpang Pulai-Cameron Highlands.

“They are detained for investigation under Section 384 of the Penal Code, Section 17(a) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009, and Section 233 of the Communication and Multimedia Act 1988.

“The investigation papers have been handed over to the Bukit Aman classified crime investigation unit and will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor once the investigation is completed,” he said.

Mohd Yusri mentioned that an internal investigation was being conducted, involving the Bukit Aman Integrity and Standards Compliance Department.

“Perak JSPT discovered a viral video on social media showing a traffic policeman stopping tourists in a travel vlog in Malaysia and offering to settle a fine by receiving an RM100 bribe.

“We urge the victims in this case to come forward and assist in the investigation as soon as possible. The public is also advised not to make any speculations that can affect the police’s investigation,” he said.

Earlier, Mohd Yusri confirmed that they had identified the police officers involved in the incident.

He also stated that the tourist couple cooperated fully when contacted by the police.

Previously, a video went viral when a traffic policeman issued and offered to settle a summons for exceeding the speed limit on the spot for the UK couple.

The policeman involved claimed the couple was speeding at 80 kilometres per hour (km/h), exceeding the speed limit of 60 km/h, before issuing the summons.

However, the policeman offered a ‘discount’ fine from RM300 to RM100 if the couple paid him on the spot. – January 30, 2024
