Muda’s call to sack me over Najib’s sentence reduction is immature: Zaliha

Federal territories minister says decision to halve prison time, decrease fine was made collectively

9:36 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa has said that it was immature for Muda to call for her removal after the fledgling party accused her of failing in her duties as the government representative in the Pardons Board.

She said the call for her to be sacked is Muda’s personal opinion as the decision to halve former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s jail term was a collective decision.

“The decision (on Najib) was made collectively by the Pardons Board. The call for me to be sacked is immature,” she said yesterday after a meeting with editors at her ministry.

She added that questions on the grounds of Najib’s sentence reduction – 12-year jail term halved to six and the RM210 million fine reduced to RM50 million – should be directed at the Pardons Board.

Muda, in a fiery statement yesterday, also urged Zaliha to explain the rationale behind the board’s decision as this pertains to the country’s international image.

The party also called for the removal of all government appointees on the board to be sacked.

Najib had his 12-year prison sentence for corruption in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case cut to six years, and the fine imposed by the court reduced from RM210 million to RM50 million.

He will be released on August 23, 2028, or a year later if he fails to pay the reduced fine, the board announced earlier today. – February 3, 2024
