KUALA LUMPUR – Bukit Gantang MP Datuk Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal’s assertion that another 10 Bersatu MPs will back the prime minister is a “fishing” attempt, claimed Dr Afif Bahardin.
Dr Afif, who is a Bersatu supreme council member, said Syed Hussin was also trying to prove his loyalty to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
“I spoke to several of our MPs and they said they haven’t heard or know anything about it.
“I think Bukit Gantang is fishing, he only started talking after switching his support to Anwar. Saying this is just to prove his new-found loyalty,” he told Scoop today.
Dr Afif, who is Taman Medan assemblyman, also likened the situation to that faced by football team Manchester United, where a losing team will see a dip in popularity but recover when they start winning.
“Based on what the council decided, we will try to compel those who are supporting Anwar to vacate their seats and pave the way for by-elections. We are discussing how we would proceed with that.”
Bersatu has a total of 31 MPs, of which six have switched support but remain in the party.
The six are: Syed Hussin, Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Mohd Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan) and Datuk Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tg Karang).
Recently, Syed Hussin teased that 10 more Bersatu MPs would back Anwar, which would be announced by February 26 when the Dewan Rakyat reconvenes.
Yesterday, Bersatu information chief Datuk Razali Idris said the party would hold an emergency meeting soon to amend its constitution. – February 4, 2024
