Mokhzani and Mirzan Mahathir have yet to declare assets to MACC: Azam Baki

MACC chief says asset declaration is just one part of the extensive investigations

4:13 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir and Mirzan Mahathir, sons of former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, have yet to submit their asset declaration notices to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki confirmed this, while saying that the two businessmen can be charged for failing to comply with notices filed under Section 36 of the MACC Act 2009.

“But they can apply for an extension to submit their declarations,” he was quoted as saying by BH after he spoke to the press at an event in Kuching, Sarawak today.

Azam said the anti-graft investigation has many facets to it and asset declaration is just one part of it.

“This means that the prosecution against them will be delayed because we need to complete the investigation first.”

MACC had confirmed that Mirzan, who is Dr Mahathir’s eldest son, was served a notice on January 17 to declare all his assets both here and abroad within 30 days.

Besides information on the 65-year-old in the Panama Papers, the agency is also investigating his business activities that involve the sale and acquisition of government-linked companies (GLCs).

On January 26, Scoop reported that Mokhzani was served a notice order to declare his assets.

An MACC source said the investigation into the businessman was believed to be related to his shareholding in a government-linked company (GLC) involved in government projects.

The GLC company is said to have won a licence to fabricate structures for use in the exploration of oil and gas for a national petroleum giant, while Dr Mahathir was serving as prime minister. – February 6, 2024
