Chinese New Year exodus begins from Kuala Lumpur

Traffic reportedly building up on major highways, set to worsen after working hours today

10:49 AM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Traffic is building up on major highways this morning as Kuala Lumpur sees an exodus of people ahead of Chinese New Year.

The government’s waiver on tolls for today and tomorrow is also expected to cause higher traffic volume later today after working hours, Bernama reports a Malaysian Highway Authority spokesman saying.

PLUS Malaysia has reported higher traffic at these stretches of the North-South Highway: Permatang Pauh-Prai, Slim River-Sungkai, Setia Alam-Shah Alam and Bandar Gamuda Cove-Bandar Saujana Putra.

The Highway Authority has reported slow-moving traffic on the Ayer Keroh-Jasin route, while traffic flow on the East Coast Expressway (LPT) 1,  LPT 2, and Sg Besi and Skudai toll plazas remains smooth in both directions.

“The public is expected to take advantage of toll-free travel for two days starting today,” the Highway Authority spokesman said.

Travel is toll-free on all highways for Class 1 (private) vehicles today until 11.59pm tomorrow, with the exception of toll plazas at the Johor-Singapore border, namely, the Sultan Iskandar Building and Tg Kupang, both in Johor.

Latest traffic updates can be obtained by calling the toll-free Plusline at 1-800-88-0000 or via www.twitter.com/plustrafik, or through the Highway Authority hotline at 1-800-88-7752 and social media page at www.twitter.com/llminfotrafik. – February 8, 2024
