Sri Sabah flat fire: all 16 victims moved to SK Seri Cheras relief centre

Resident rep says decision was made after discussion with Social Welfare Dept, DBKL and school headmaster

1:38 PM MYT

KUALA LUMPUR – Victims whose houses were destroyed in the fire that engulfed the 17th floor of Block 70, Sri Sabah Flats here last night have been placed at SK Seri Cheras temporary relief centre.

The Sri Sabah 3B residents’ association chairman, Zainal Abidin, said the decision came after a discussion with the Social Welfare Department director, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL), and the school headmaster.

He said the victims, comprising 16 individuals affected by the fire, were placed at the relief centre from midnight to 2am today.

“Initially, we wanted to place the victims at Block 6B, but the area is quite cramped. So, we agreed to place them at SK Seri Cheras relief centre.

“A total of 16 victims from five families affected in the fire are now at the centre,” he said.

Scoop’s observation found that the incident site is guarded by police and DBKL officers.

The police officers were guarding the entrance to the upper floor of the block, which caught fire at around 9.30pm last night, while DBKL assisted by mobilising water tanks to the site this morning.

Some residential units in the block were said to have experienced water supply disruption following the fire last night.

Earlier, it was reported that the fire extinguishing system failure on the 17th floor of the block caused difficulties for the fire brigade team to extinguish the fire.

KL Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Pauzi said the difficulties have caused the fire brigade to place a water pump on the 16th floor of the block to facilitate extinguishing the fire. – February 12, 2024
