MACC nabs navy officer, company owner over RM9 mil in contracts

KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detained two more individuals as part of its probe into an alleged “procurement cartel” involving construction works at a Royal Malaysian Navy camp in Johor valued at over RM9 million. 

According to sources, the suspects, a 42-year-old navy officer and a 55-year-old company owner, were arrested at the Johor MACC office at around 4pm today to aid in the anti-graft agency’s investigation. 

When contacted, Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias confirmed the arrests.

Both suspects will be brought to the Johor Bahru magistrates’ court at 8.30am tomorrow to secure a remand application. 

On January 18, three men aged between 28 and 47 who are believed to be the masterminds of the cartel were detained by the graft busters, also at the Johor MACC office. 

It is understood that the arrests were made on charges of false claims and being masterminds of the “procurement cartel” involving 13 supplier companies managing construction works at the navy camp.

Sources said then that full payment had been made, but construction had yet to be satisfactorily completed.

The case is being investigated under Section 18 of the MACC Act 2009 for the offence of providing false claims with the intention to deceive. – January 13, 2024
