Dr Mahathir to get proper rest after infection-related treatment at IJN

The latest treatment led to the postponement of his defamation suit against Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi

KUALA LUMPUR – Former two-time prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be undertaking a rest period after receiving treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN) for an infection.

According to a spokesperson, Dr Mahathir, who was admitted to the cardiac specialist centre on January 26, is required to undergo the rest period to recuperate.

“(Dr Mahathir) is currently receiving treatment for an infection at IJN, followed by a subsequent rest period for optimal recovery,” the spokesperson said in a text message to the media today.

Earlier, court proceedings for Dr Mahathir’s defamation suit against Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi over the latter’s alleged derogatory use of the name “Kutty” to refer to the ex-prime minister were postponed again.

The postponement was due to Dr Mahathir being on medical leave from today until February 18.

Dr Mahathir’s lawyer, Mior Nor Haidir Suhaimi, said that the case will next be heard on July 19, August 26 to 27, and October 29 and 30, while confirming that the trial scheduled for today until Friday is postponed.

In August last year, Dr Mahathir confirmed that he was admitted to IJN for an infection-related treatment. 

Prior to that, Dr Mahathir was reportedly admitted to IJN in September 2022 after he contracted Covid-19.

The 99-year-old was admitted to IJN before undergoing health screenings and was released about eight days later after undergoing several tests. – February 13, 2024
